Mobile Link Firmware 2.0 Update Adds Lightning Data, GPS Location Support and More

March 27, 2012, Huntsville, AL – Baron Services, Inc., a leading weather technology company, announced today that a free firmware update will be released for its popular Mobile Link device on April 10, 2012.

The Mobile Link allows XM WX Satellite Weather subscribers to display onboard weather data by running compatible apps on their mobile devices, including the iPhone® and iPad®. Firmware update 2.0 will add support for additional XM WX data products, the certified XMD-076 XM WX receiver from Heads-Up Technologies, and the latest WxWorx receiver’s embedded GPS (Models WR-10 and WR-10BT only).

“It gives us great pleasure to improve our products at no additional cost to customers,” stated Bob Baron, President and CEO of Baron Services. “With the new firmware update for the Baron Mobile Link, more data and functionality will be available for pilots and boaters wanting to receive onboard XM WX data using their mobile devices.”

Expanded XM WX Support
The update gives partnering app developers the opportunity to add XM WX Lightning data to mobile applications. In addition, Sea Surface Temperatures and Buoy Data will now be available for marine applications.  Lightning data from XM WX is provided by the National Lightning Detection Network, the most accurate and reliable large-scale lightning detection network in the world. The Sea Surface Temperature data is derived from complex data modeling combined with satellite and buoy observations, while actual buoy reports, including
wave height, wind data and more, are provided with the Buoy Data product.

Improved Certified Receiver Compatibility
For users requiring a certified receiver, Mobile Link is now compatible with Heads-Up Technologies’ XMD-076 receiver, in addition to the previously supported XMD-075 unit.

WxWorx Receiver GPS Support
WxWorx on Wings® customers using the WxWorx WR-10 or WR-10BT data receivers have enjoyed the benefits of an integrated WAAS-enabled GPS device. With the 2.0 firmware, the Mobile Link can access this internal device to display the user’s GPS position along with weather conditions in compatible apps.

The 2.0 update will be available for download at www.baronservices.com/mobilelinkupdate to existing customers on April 10, 2012, and will begin shipping embedded with all new Mobile Link units at the same time.  Setup instructions and tutorial videos will be provided on the page to assist customers through the upgrade process.

XM WX subscribers are encouraged to consult the developer of an app to determine which new Mobile Link features will be supported. An applicable XM WX aviation or marine data subscription is also required to receive the applicable data products.

The Mobile Link device will be on display at the 2012 SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In at XM WX Booth C024 – C026.
