Touchdown autorotation competition to challenge helicopter pilots

Jerry Trimble Helicopters holds first annual touchdown auto contest

McMinnville, OR January 15, 2011:  Jerry Trimble Helicopters (JTH) has announced the first annual touchdown autorotation competition to be held at the McMinnville airport on June 26, 2011.

The competition will be broken down into 2 categories: straight-in autos or 180° autos.  Pilots will have the choice to enter either category.  Scoring will be based on distance from the pre-established “spot” and the slide distance, if any.  Each pilot will be given up to 3 chances and all flights will be flown with Jerry Trimble unless the pilot supplies their own helicopter.  The cost to enter is $5 which will be donated to a local charity of the pilot’s choice.  Jerry Trimble Helicopters will rent the R-22 at the dual rate of $234/hour.  JTH offers a “Blow the Rust Off” package for those who wish to brush up on their autos prior to the competition.  The judges scheduled for the event are Jim Griffin, training captain of Erickson Air Crane, Mike Moffett, Life Flight pilot for Air Methods and Michael Wilson, Vice-President of Evergreen Helicopters.

“We thought it would be fun to have an event that allowed pilots to put their skill to the test, network with other helicopter pilots and have fun”, Jerry Trimble said.  The competition corresponds with the annual Lions Club Fly-in/Drive-in.  There will be an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast served 7AM – 12PM. All proceeds from the breakfast go to the McMinnville Lions Charity Programs. The public is invited to bring their antique, hot rod, street machine, muscle car or other interesting car or airplane and participate in the show. Life Flight Network will also be on display in the EC 135. Jerry Trimble Helicopters will be offering $10 helicopter rides all day.  Shuttles are available to the Evergreen Aviation Museum directly across the street from the McMinnville Airport.

This is a great idea, good to see others doing it now.
We have our 4 annual "One Shot" Full down contest this Saturday and it has always been one of the best training days and fun events. The idea is that in the event of a real power failure you only get one shot to make it work out and so we allow only one try.
Of course we plug in lots of additional safety but the end result is exactly what most helicopter pilots look for to be able to do well.
