Colorado Heli-Ops raises the bar in safety awareness with FITS designed Scenario-Based Training

Sept. 24, 2010 BROOMFIELD, CO – Last week, Colorado Heli-Ops – a local helicopter flight training center – began revising its current training protocol to include the latest in FAA-driven industry changes. FITS, or Federal Aviation Administration Industry Training Standards, is charged with transitioning civil ab initio flight training from the traditionally taught, maneuver-based training to scenario-based training (SBT). With the advent of newer technologies that require General Aviation pilots to process more information and to make better decisions, FITS training changes the primary focus of training new pilots from aircraft maneuvers, to include more emphasis on Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM), Risk Management (RM), Single Pilot Resource Management (SRM) and Learner Centered Grading Colorado HeliOps Classroom(LCG).

Michael Franz, an experienced pilot evaluator, mentor and member of the FAA’s Safety Team (FAAST), generously donated his time and knowledge to the eager staff at Colorado Heli-Ops as they continue to be on the leading edge of helicopter flight training.  The three-day training session that took place at Heli-Ops’ Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport location was designed to introduce the basics of FITS, SBT, and LCG, the application of which was ready for implementation immediately. Colorado Heli-Ops Flight Instructors are some of the first FITS/SBT qualified Facilitators. Over the course of the next several months, Colorado Heli-Ops will refine and improve its training protocol to take advantage of the FITS/SBT  technology, effectively raising the bar to the safest helicopter flight training in the entire industry.

During his visit, Michael flew with and evaluated instructors one-on-one, giving them the ability to show the practical relevance of SBT in flight. Since FITS/SBT training is easily applied to the content of existing helicopter flight training, the staff at Heli-Ops has already begun its transition and facilitation of SBT and LCG. This will give its Pilots in Training (PT) a comprehensive and efficient platform for their training, and is proven to produce safer and more aware pilots as technologies continue to advance.

Colorado Heli-Ops boasts the addition of its General Manager/Owner, Dennis Pierce, to the FAAST team as well, furthering its commitment to safety in flight training. The flight school has been locally owned and operated since June 2009, and offers other helicopter services such as Denver tours and aerial photography.  For more information, please visit their website: http://www.coloradoheliops.com or find them on their Facebook page.
