For ‘Museums At Night’ 2010 The Helicopter Museum is going bigger and better by hosting an event that no aviation fan will be able to resist!

The theme for this year years event is ’The Battle of Britain’ to tie in with the 70th anniversary of the historic WWII conflict later this year.

Throughout the weekend of May 15 and 16, the hangars and display buildings of the World famous Museum will be brimming with over 50 flight simulators of various shapes and sizes demonstrating the controls and manoeuvrability of a myriad aircraft including helicopters, fighter jets and passenger airliners. Visitors will be able to test fly all these aircraft at no extra cost. The main attraction of the weekend will be the incredible head to head ‘Spitfire vs Messershmidt’ dogfight simulator. Visitors will be able to climb into a reconstructed cockpit of the two aircraft and engage in a simulated dogfight over a London skyline care of the very latest in flight sim technology.

Also over the weekend there will be real helicopters landing and taking off from the museums helipad including the Great Western and Dorset & Somerset Air ambulances, flights around the Weston Coastline in a Bell Jet-ranger (additional cost) and non stop big screen action courtesy of The Virtual RAF Battle of Britain Flypasts.

If that wasn’t enough there will also be a WWII encampment on site, care of The Ack Ack Living History Group with authentic vehicles, tents, a shot down ME109 mock-up and a real Bofors Anti Aircraft Gun.

Then as the evening of Saturday night arrives we go BACK TO THE BLITZ for Museums at Night 2010.

As air raid sirens sound and giant searchlights illuminate the exhibition hangar all the flight simulators will switch over and link up to recreate a gigantic air battle over the bombed ruins of London. Also look out for members of The Home Guard and shot down German pilots around the museum!

The Museum NAAFI Café will be serving mugs of tea, hot stew and authentic period home made cakes throughout the evening.

All proceeds from this event are shared between the three charities involved.
