AERIAL teams with Antipodean Aviation and Embry‐Riddle Aeronautical University to offer worldwide HUET Training

MEADOWS OF DAN, VA. Aerial Machine & Tool Corp and parent company, Aqua Lung have teamed up with Antipodean Aviation and Embry‐Riddle Aeronautical University to offer specialized safety training programs for pilots and crew members globally. The first program to be offered will be Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) or otherwise referred to as “Emergency Water Landings.” While geared towards helicopter crews, the HUET program covers both fixed wing and rotary wing ditching procedures. The program is being offered in the United States, Australia, Asia and Europe and features Mobile Training Units—submersible simulators‐‐‐that mimic downed aircraft in a realistic fashion. The training units can be transported worldwide to accommodate customer needs.

There are two courses available as part of the HUET program:

  1. Aircraft Ditching, Escape and Survival: This option is designed for general aviators (recreational, sport, private and light commercial) and covers both rotary and fixed wing platforms. The course covers flight preparation, ditching techniques, underwater escape, and surface survival at sea.
  2. Aircraft Ditching, Escape and Survival with Emergency Breathing Systems: This option is an advanced extension of the first course and is intended for military, civil and commercial flight crews that carry emergency breathing systems as part of their Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). This course includes training in the use of the Helicopter Aircrew Breathing Device (HABD) and Survival Egress Air systems (SEA).

As the master worldwide distributor of Aqua Lung’s Survival Egress Air emergency breathing systems, AERIAL welcomes the opportunity to supply demo equipment to Antipodean’s trainers who are now able to offer university certification and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through Embry‐Riddle. SEA systems are compact, self‐contained compressed air cylinders with integrated breathing regulators‐‐‐much like miniature SCUBA. The flight‐vest‐mounted system allows pilots and crews to breathe underwater‐‐‐and make their escape‐‐‐in the critical moments following an emergency water landing.

According to AERIAL president, John Marcaccio, “HUET training is essential for aircrews operating over water. Without it, chances for surviving a water landing are slim at best. Aqua Lung’s Survival Egress Air (SEA) systems are the best emergency breathing systems available, but they will only save lives if crew members are properly trained and experienced in their use. This program gives aviators the hands‐on training they’ll need to survive a water crash. The use of submersible simulators elevates this program way beyond book learning. Participants actually have to escape from a submerged cockpit.”

Max Reidy, General Manager for Antipodean Aviation, comments, “For many years our instructors have travelled the world teaching HUET courses for workplace trainers and personnel involved in aviation and oil and gas industry operations. We are often asked for recommendations on what equipment our clients should purchase for their own operations. Our response is to purchase the best and most reliable equipment available‐‐since your life could depend on it. In our view, AERIAL’s Aviation Life Support Equipment leads the world‐‐‐and that is why we use it ourselves.”

Senior Instructor for Aircrew and Safety Training Programs for Antipodean Aviation, Nathan Pollard states, “As instructors we see the variety of training programs offered worldwide. But partnering with Embry‐Riddle Aeronautical University puts this program in a new league. This is the most comprehensive HUET program available and the only one that offers university certification. “
