Universal Avionics Boasts First Success Story for the “Technical Career Pathways” Grant Program

Tucson, AZ – July 25, 2012 – Universal Avionics is proud to be part of the first Southern Arizona Technical Career Pathways H1B Grant success story for Pima County, Arizona. Yazmin Farias, an intern at Universal Avionics working as a Manufacturing Continuous Improvement Project Engineer, took advantage of the company’s tuition reimbursement alongside the grant funds to help pay for her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arizona’s Engineering program. Yazmin was recently offered a full-time employment opportunity as a Manufacturing Project Engineer in Tucson upon her graduation from the University.

Available to high-tech businesses in the southern Arizona counties of Pima, Cochise, Santa Cruz and Yuma where Universal Avionics’ Corporate Headquarters and Manufacturing Division is located, the H1B Grant provides an opportunity for workers to gain the education and skills needed to advance in the high-tech workplace. The grant “provide(s) training for 200 incumbent workers to move up into high level occupations, thus expanding the existing pipeline of high-tech talent in the region, capitalizing on recent innovations increasing workers’ access to higher education and increasing the diversity of the high-tech workforce.” The grant pays for 50 percent of the cost of tuition and books for the employee/student, with their employer matching the other 50 percent. Targeted degrees include Engineering (Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical and Aerospace), Computer Systems Analysts, Network Administrators and Systems Engineers.

“Our opportunity to participate in this grant is a win-win for both employee and employer. From a career point, employees are achieving higher education which can lead to career advancement and higher earnings. From a financial point, both employee and employer get to stretch their continuing education dollars much further,” said Kim Murray, Universal Avionics’ Corporate Director of Human Resources. “Yazmin is a perfect example of success within the grant and we are very pleased to have her put her engineering degree to work with us,” she added.

Yazmin credits Universal for being very supportive of her education and an overall excellent place to work. Now with a major in Engineering Management and a minor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, she hopes to someday continue her education by pursuing a Master’s degree.

KVOA News Channel 4 will be featuring this story tomorrow, Thursday July 25th on its morning show airing between 5am and 7am.
