Insurability of UAVs - The “Gorilla in the Room”

Among the topics discussed at the annual meeting of the Association of Unmanned Vehicles Systems International was an update of the group's March 2013 study of the economic impact of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The study showed that in the first three years of UAS integration into the National Airspace System (NAS), the industry would create 70,000 jobs, with an economic impact of $13.6 billion.

Every weekend, I have received calls from distraught dispatchers and frantic pilots telling me that their Garmin or other devices do not have the correct TFRs on them. TFRs that were cancelled the night before “are still there!” TFRs that have been modified “have disappeared!!” TFRs that are new are “not shown !” I have begun to notice a trend and decided to check out various device manuals.

UAS Experts Discuss Public Aircraft of UAVs

UAS experts from across the country gathered in Washington, DC early last week for the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International’s (AUVSI) annual tradeshow to discuss the future of this growing industry.

As well as a fully stocked exhibit floor, the show contained a number of workshops, panels, and information sessions focused on a variety of topics including UAS integration.

“We envision UAS used… on a situation-by-situation basis… not on patrol or roaming around the skies,” Mike Fergus of the International Association of Chiefs of Police said. “The primary market is for… the vast majority of [police departments] that will never be able to afford a material asset, not just NYPD, Miami-Dade, or NYPD.”
