My name is Paul Matheson. I am 25 years old and my goal, dream, and passion in life is to fly helicopters. When I was 3 or 4 years old, I was with my family on our way to a cabin when we came upon a horrible car accident. I will never forget hearing the sound of the Bell 206 L4 as it approached and landed directly in front of us. We watched as the patient was loaded and the helicopter departed for the hospital. Ever since that day, I have wanted to become a helicopter pilot. When I turned 16, I got my drivers license and bought my first vehicle and every day after school I would drive up to the University of Utah Hospital and park in a parking lot that sat above the heli-pad. I would do my homework and watch the helicopters come and go. Eventually I got to be good friends with the pilots and some of the flight team and was invited to go on a ride-along during my Jr. year of high school. The day of my ride-along we had 6 helicopter flights which included an industrial accident, a traffic accident, several interfacility transports and an injured skier from a ski resort. This was my first time ever in a helicopter and I thought I was hooked before, I was hooked, lined and sinker now. After my ride-along I asked if I could participate in an internship with the flight program to which they responded hesitantly but decided to let me give it a shot. Every other day during my Sr. year of high school I was able to leave at lunch and participate in a non-paid, off campus internship with the flight team where I flew along with the flight teams and was put on different committees which involved getting a fourth helicopter for the flight program. After I graduated from high school, I served a mission for the LDS church in Wisconsin for 2 years. When I returned, I immediately immersed myself in the helicopter world again and enrolled in Utah Valley University's global avation degree program and started my flight training. In just under 10 months, I had received my private, instrument, and commercial ratings and I was approached by a local helicopter operator who offered me the opportunity of a lifetime to fly his Bell 206 BIII doing tours, charters, and film contract work. I did this for about 2 months and then was told by the owner/operator that he was selling his aircraft and business because of the economy. I was heartbroken and at the time could not afford to go back to flight school to get my CFI/CFII. Since that time, I have gotten married and my wife and I have decided that now is the time to go back to flight school for me to get my CFI/CFII. My ultimate passion in life is flying helicopters and being the safest pilot I know how to be. I love the aviation community and can't wait to get back in the saddle.
