Hi guys, I'm a Canadian pilot who is looking into getting his FAA licence and IFR rating. Not to work in the states but to potentially work over seas. I have 2500hrs and was wondering how much money this would cost? I live about 3 hrs from Spokane Wa. Thanks for any possible insight.

Ok let me reword this. Can I do my IR rating in an airplane and then do a certain amount of hours on helicopter? (like you can up here) to save money. Instead of doing it all on a heli. In order to get the IR rating?

Plumber How funny! I went to Canada to get my CPL for use overseas! Several of the countries I had worked in frowned on FAA licenses but welcomed anything Canadian! I'm sure you have had your questions answered with more current info than I can offer. Cheers Rocky

I hear that a FAA with instrument rating will open more doors. The VFR world in Canada is changing rapidly and not for the better. Thanks for the response guys.

Plumber - Funny story from about 1973 ... I was flying a 206 from Jo'burg So Afrika to the town of Durban. Weather got snotty about 40 north of Durban and I was VFR on top. When I called approach control, they gave me a clearance for the approach and I started down. Was in the goo and IMC for perhaps :10 when I popped out at around 1000'msl. Durban is at sea level so I had plenty of terrain clearance. When I got to the airport, the tower controller said "You're a bloody helicopter!!" I asked if something was wrong and he replied, "No. We've just never seen a helicopter do an instrument approach before!" Then I realized my helicopter registry number was prefixed like a F/W. There were only 5 civil helicopters registered in S.A. at the time and they eventually changed the prefix to ZH to indicate helicopter. Got to see a lot of changes in aviation in my career. As a note of interest, I was never given need of my Canada CPL while flying foreign after I got it. Expensive add-on!

Plumber,
You'll need 40 hours for the IR, of which half can be done in an authorized sim, which is good as it can cut costs. Check CFR 61.65 for the rating specifics. (I just started on mine in the sim and it's loads of fun!)

I think we are going to be the cheapest. Our FLY It sim is $125/hour and our R22 IFR trainer is $300/hour. Do 20 hours in each and take a checkride. Free housing, too!
