Hello , Im looking for input on schools with Post 911 certs that are as close to the New York area as possible. I would like to make the move into the avation unit in my department as there will be a few openings in the coming years.

From the research I've done so far it looks like any way I slice it I'll have to take some vacation and try to bang out as much of my PPL if not all since there are no Post 911 schools near by.

Any advice on getting up to commercial as fast as possible?

If you're already a cop you shouldn't need the commercial to fly in LE (unless your department is requiring it for some reason). However, the fastest way to the 150 hours needed for it would be to answer a "time-building" ad. There are usually some posted on Vertical Reference, and there's also Boatpix, I think they charge around $200/hr plus fuel for time-builders to take pictures of boats. There was also an ad on VR to fly Pipeline Patrol with a guy for I think $150/hr?

Thanks for the response , Unfortunately my department requires the commercial at this points in time. The other Departments besides state only require private. I am thinking of making a trip down to West Palm beach Cloud 9 helicopters and spending a month training as many hours a day as I can fit. I know there are closer schools that are Post 911 approved but its fairly cheap to get flights to FL.

For the departments that only require a Private do they have their own in house training to add on instrument and commercial? Does that private pilot start out as an observer?

While there are agencies that only require private, that is not the ALEA Standard. Our unit is small (6 pilots) in a medium sized community, we require Comm and Inst. helicopter to even APPLY for a pilot slot and we're flying OH58s.
