perhaps there are some of you experienced folks out there that could help me with some advice regarding the possibility of continuing my rotary wing flying career... i'm currently an army helicopter pilot, but will be separating shortly. i would like to continue flying, but only have just over 900 hours total time. i have about 100 hours in a th-67/bell 206, 160 hours in a uh-72 lakota/ec145, 640 hours in a ch-47 chinook/bv-234 and about 110 hours of combined simulator time in the above airframe and uh-1 huey simulators. i do not have any flight time prior to the army, nor am i a cfi. i do have an faa commercial rotorcraft instrument rating. i also have the g.i. bill which will assist in funding any va approved training courses/programs. i know that 1000 hours is generally the minimum required hours for any flying positions due to insurance costs and requirements. what available options are there for building time? any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I’d suggest using your GI benies to get your CFI and CFII. After that, apply at GOM operators. From my understanding, some Gulf operators appreciate ex-mil folks more than any other run-of-the-mill operators… Good luck.

Hi Clint, first of all, thank you for your service. I have been working at PHI for going on 7 years, currently flying the s76. I would strongly advise you to take a look at our company. While there are plenty of people that complain and gripe on these types of forums, one thing I have never seen is anyone complaining about PHI's maintenance. To me, having an aircraft and ground team you can trust is priceless. We have a lot of former military pilots that have recently joined our ranks. There is a very good chance that you can skip flying light ships, if that is what you want, and go directly in to an s76 or even the s92. The HR department is usually pretty swamped, so please be patient with the application process. I was recently told they receive over 100 applications weekly. If you have any questions I would be happy to try to answer them. Feel free to contact me at 801-916-0405. Good luck with whatever you decide. Keith

How long does it usually take to get on with PHI? I have been waiting for two months... is that usual? I realize that their HR is very busy, but can I expect it to take much longer? I am a retired W4, SIP, IE, CFII with over 5000 hours of rotary wing experience. I'm sure I'm qualified for their toughest position, but I don't know how long I should expect to wait for an answer. I also have an application in with ERA and I wouldn't mind getting on with them in their SAR mission. Either one would be great at this point. I have a passion for flying and I am eager to get on in the GoM. Can you give me any guidance?
