I'm interested in flying in China as they expand their general aviation. I have about 1,300 TT. I have emailed a few companies through general web searching with no luck.

Any suggestions on breaking into this market?

I would be extremely careful with jobs in China. I know several pilots who have been burned on the fixed wing side.

It seems many Chinese companies (and contract flight crew providers who work with them) have a habit of making big promises of salary and benefits in order to lure pilots to China. The problem is that when those pilots get there, quite often those promises fall by the wayside and the pilot is left with no legal recourse and most times, no way to move back to the US. Don't forget, China does not have a Department of Labor to enforce employment practices, and as a foreigner, you are treated as a second class citizen there. Written contract or not, you will not have any luck pursuing legal options when you find out that the company has conveniently forgotten the promises they made you. The guys I know have found living conditions to be very poor, the hours long, and the aircraft maintenance generally lacking.

China is booming, and it may seem like the perfect opportunity to build time and make some decent money, but I'd be very wary and ask to speak with other American pilots who've worked for any company you're considering.

I wish you the best in your search.

Blue Skies,

Having worked worldwide in many countries, may I offer my inputs. I tried to do something in China with agricultural aviation about 20 years ago. I finally gave up after the double talk and failure of them giving me any guarantees of payment for performance or services. The chinese have thousands of years of business dealings with foreigners and they always seem to come out ahead. I've always wanted to go see the Chinese Wall, and the Gobi desert but it will be as a tourist rather than working. Any overseas contracts require some careful study and research before you commit to going to some schithole and findng yourself stuck with no funds, no help, and wondering why you allowed yourself to get here? I can certainly empathise with your desires to go someplace to work exotic. BTDT. Best of luck Rocky
