MOI training at Ft. Rucker. Read a post from six years ago. Understand it is 8 weeks long. Does URS compensate while going through the training?

About 6 weeks, depends on the weather and you. Paid around $120 per day.

Yes, six weeks and $120 per day and it's not easy! You must memorize every Emergency Procedure, Limitation, Warning, Caution, and Note for the TH-67 (Bell 206 BIII) Plus Aerodynamics, Aeromedical, and military flight regs. Plus you don’t have the job until you’re done and take an acceptance check ride. Well worth the pain though, you learn a lot if you can make it through and you’ll be a better pilot too. By the way, the last time I heard the current stats on MOI graduation is only 3 out 5 make it through. Once you have the job it’s just maintaining the knowledge as you teach the students because you do have “no notice checkrides” and “annual checkrides” that if failed will cost you two days of retraining and then if you still don’t pass you lose your job. (Which in the three years I’ve been here, no one has lost their job because of it.) But with all that said, I only work six hours a day (but get paid for eight), every holiday paid time off, two weeks paid at Christmas, one week paid annual leave. It’s a really good gig once you learn how to put up with all the Army crap.

I just saw a posting for this on the URS website... they're only asking for 500hrs in category. Does anyone know how hard that requirement is, or could I compete with 600TT with 390 heli? Thanks!

390 helicopter hours would not be enough. The 500 hour limit is the absolute minimum the Army would accept. I don't know of anyone being hired with 500 hours helicopter, but you never know. All you can do is apply, if you don't apply, they will not hire you.

Rumor has it that URS has a hiring freeze?

The posting on the website for 500 hours of helicopter time is correct but like it has been said, that is an absolute minimum. The lowest time person I’ve seen hired, or given a chance to go through MOI had 1300 hrs TT and over 1000 of dual given. And that was when they were hiring like gang busters! There is no “hiring freeze”, but with that said they are not hiring right now. They have enough IP’s to fill the contract requirement, therefore no need to hire. If you wanted to be competitive and apply for the one or two positions that might open up next year, you had better have at least 2500 hrs TT and well over 1000 of dual given.

8300+ hours w/ 2100+ instruction given. Bell 206 factory training annually for the past 16 years. Just ready for a change and have always enjoyed instructing. Really appreciate all of the info. Thanks Mitchell_99!
