I am looking for a used helmet, SPH-4B/5 or HGU 56. I have been checking eBay and searching google but I am a little wary of not being able to see the helmet's condition in person. What are your thoughts regarding buying sight unseen? I have a limited budget since this is for a volunteer TFO position. I was also wondering what you guys think is a good price and perhaps where else I could search for one. Any other thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

A relative of mine bought a helmet on ebay based on picures listed in the ad. When it was delivered there was a crack that compromised the integrity of the helmet. When compared to the ad pictures you could then clearly see the side the crack was on was away from the camera. It COULD have happened during shipping, but who knows. The seller got negative reputation comments, but has the money, and has not offered to return it. Buyer beware. Caveat Emptor. A 3rd party approach would probably cost a commission, but might be worth it.

Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I am afraid of. I'd prefer to find a local sale that I could see the helmet in person instead of just rolling the dice. The search continues.

Only 2 weeks ago I was in a similar position, needing a new helmet, prepared to pay good money, but not wanting to drop 2K on a brand new helmet.

I advertised on this very forum and although I only got 2 replies I ended up with an awesome buy from a fellow reader. Brought a Gallet LH250 with all the bells 'n' whistles (bag, manual, NVG etc...) in mint condition for less than half price. Absolutely no evidence of use (seller said he only wore it 3 times).

I'm lovin' the 'new' helmet!

Buying from the likes of E-bay is a bit of a lottery and seldom are the sellers actually aviators and know what they are selling. Otherwise www.helicopterhelmets.com have some excellent deals of 'refurbished' units for around $750.

I have a brand new size regular SPH-5 dual visor with an NVG mount that is new in the box, never worn. I am asking $975 for it.

This is a civilian / commercial helmet purchased thru Gibson Barnes. It is blemish free and guaranteed in perfect working condition and appearance. THIS HELMET IS SOLD...

You might call Ron Abbot at www.HelicopterHelmet.com as he flew boatpix in like 2001 and last I knew he was flying a Bell 429 in Africa. He has a booth near us at HeliExpo and he is really knowledgeable on what is comfortable on his own head. He flies helicopters and he sells helicopter helmets and headsets. Greetings from Cape May, New Jersey today!

I'm sure your helmet is in perfect condition and you are a stand up guy. I have no reason to believe anything you write here is not true but I would leave out the I am a deputy sheriff so it's got to be good part. I was a police captain for many years and just like pilots, doctors, lawyers, and cops, I've seen good ones and I've seen horrible ones. Also some people here just seem to hate cops to begin with (probably because they haven't needed one to save them or they were caught doing something wrong) so you're making your target buyer audience smaller by adding that.

Again, I'm sure you are one of the good ones because you wrote your name and phone number and usually the scam artists won't do to that. I think the helmet pictures speak volumes and it looks great.

Good luck selling it and be safe,
